Solids include any solid with one atom or more in the form of a solid, such as iron, copper, and platinum.Molecules are created by adding two atoms of another element. Molecules may have only one double bond, which is referred to as a monomer. If there are more than one monomer in a molecule, then it is called polymers. Molecules are usually labeled with the number of atoms in the molecule, which is also known as the atomic mass of the molecule.Mole, atoms, and masses are frequently used int erchangeably in chemistry, but it is important to distinguish between these terms. The number of atoms in a molecule is referred to as its atomic mass. A molecule is generally formed by adding atoms of different elements together in such a way that the number of atoms in the end product equal the number of atoms in the initial atom. All the added atoms are separated by distances, and the atoms make up the molecules. Molecules are considered long-chain molecules, which are molecules made up of long chains of atoms.Mole, atom, and mass are similar to the concepts of the covalent bond, the bond, and the ionic compound. Guitars went electric and could be amplified and the violin followed suit.While the first electric violin was born in 1874, it wouldn’t be until 1920 until they were commonly being used. While it still hasn't really become common in orchestral music, there are still many genres with music for the electric violin.Aside from the lack of a sound box, which means electric violins don't have the F holes commonly associated with violins, the instrument is similar to a tra ditional violin in a number of ways:The body includes the bridge which the violin strings rest upon.The head has a scroll and tuning pegs (they are tuned exactly the same).The neck under the strings.The shoulder restAcoustic violins are often made of wood (spruce, maple, ebony, etc.) while electric violins can be made of more modern materials like plastics. However, while many of you have probably thought about that, people often refuse even to try to organize such a schedule because they think it doesnt fit their companys corporate culture or their position, or they are simply afraid to make a bad impression on the employer. So consider the suggested 10 tips below as they would not only help you get your desired schedule but would also increase your credibility in the eyes of your employer. 1. Figure out what you really want A flexible schedule is a general concept that can be interpreted in different ways. Candidates often ask for flexible hours, but everyone understands it in their own way: possibility to have lunch at any time during the working day; opportunity to leave the workplace for personal matters and work it out in the evening or on the weekend; working from home once a week; working four days a week instead of five; or shifting the traditional 9-to-5 to something that works, etc. Have you ever thought if you actually need to work from home some days or shifting the traditional working hours to those more appropriate for you? 2. Do your research Flexible scheduling opportunities might already be available within your company, although you might not currently be aware of it. So check your company policies and ask your manager or colleges to find out what options are there before making a formal request. 3. Try to fill your boss shoes Make sure that your work results will not be affected due to the new schedule. It might be critical for some professions to work directly in the office or in a specific period of time. Additionally, when it comes to the specific industries (such as IT), team work often helps to resolve issues much faster. Consider whether you really have the ability to work as efficiently in a flexible schedule. 4. Try to predict questions You should start from considering the questions: How will a flexible schedule make you more efficient? How do you see your work in the new environment? When are you going to be available and how your colleges should connect you? How are you going to report your results? What meetings are you going to attend in person? Answers are best written as points or short speeches. You may even create presentation materials to show how serious your approach is. 5. Find the right time There are two options to discuss flexible hours: before accepting a job offer; after you have already worked for a while at the company. Let’s be honest, it is not the best idea to change rules when you have work in the company only for a few months. It does not look professional. So if you did not discuss flexible options at the beginning, you should wait at least six months from your start date to discuss changes (unless something critical happened). Raise this issue at a regular career meeting if this is possible, so you can discuss the results and talk about the strategy for the next period. The timing may be different for you but only when you have shown good results and your boss understands your value for the company. 6. Ask your college Ask your colleges with the flexible schedule to share experience of their negotiation. If there is nobody in your company, ask those who were trying to discuss it or find friends from other companies in your sphere and ask them. It could help you determine the most difficult issues in the organization and discussion of flexible working hours and get ready. 7. Set up a meeting Determine the right person to discuss the flexible schedule (in most cases this will be your boss) and put a time on the calendar for both of you to discuss your needs. Do not forget to indicate the topic of the conversation in the invitation to the meeting. I suggest discussing such requests in person so that you can build a constructive dialogue rather than simply get a response without being able to clarify details or alternatives. 8. Focus on the benefits to the company Clearly outline the benefits your new schedule will have for the company. Will the flex schedule allow you to take additional responsibilities/ faster respond to customer requests/ being more attentive to details/ etc.? If it is the win-win offer, the conversation becomes more comfortable and your boss will be more receptive and willing to indulge you. To ensure that there is no reason to say “No”, address the possible hindrances, and suggest viable ways to overcome them. It will also show your boss that you care about the overall success of the business, not only about your personal comfort. 9. Ask to do a trial period Suggesting a trial period is the best way to get your boss’ approval. It will make your employer feel confident that if something goes wrong, he can get things back. The trial period may last from a few weeks to a couple of months. During this period you have to do all your best to show that the flex schedule has been a great decision. It is important to keep track of your work. In the beginning it may be crucial to make detailed reports about your activities and results each working day to avoid misunderstandings. Remember that it is also a good time for you to understand if it does really work in your case. Do not be afraid to get back to standard schedule if you see that things go wrong and it turned out too heavy to manage the workload this way. 10. Be ready to compromise Your supervisor may delay your request do not matter how credible your points are. Always be ready to discuss other options and do not give up. Ask why your offer was denied and how you can prove that you deserve a chance. It may be a good idea to come back to this conversation later, for example, on the next annual assessment. If you are sure that you have done everything right and flexible working hours are critical for you, it may be a good reason to quit your job in this company and look for new opportunities. Bryce earned his Bachelors degree in Bioengineering in 2012 from the University of Washington. He is currently a New York City tutor specializing in Biology tutoring, MCAT prep tutoring, Chemistry tutoring, and much more. See what he had to share about his time at the University of Washington: VT: Describe the campus setting and transportation options.How urban or safe is the campus?Are there buses or do you need a car/bike? Bryce:The University of Washington is in its own enclave of Seattle. It is about three miles from downtown, and while it is still in an urban setting, the entire neighborhood revolves around the campus. The off-campus safety is sometimes questionable, but there is an incredibly low crime rate on campus, even very late at night. I had a bike all four years, and a car during my final two, but the bus system is good enough to get you where you need to be within 20 minutes. VT:How available are the professors, academic advisers, and teaching assistants? Bryce:The University of Washington is a huge school; my largest class was 770 students. That being said, the professors are amazing at being available to students via office hours, email, and private appointments. Almost every class has at least one teaching assistant, and they are even more available than the professors. The key to getting the attention of your professors at the University of Washington is to, 1.) stand out in class (positively, obviously), ask questions, and go to office hours and/or, 2.) choose a strong but small major. For instance, my bioengineering class had 50 students in it, and I knew all of my professors quite well. VT: How would you describe the dorm life rooms, dining options, location, socialization opportunities with other students? Bryce:Dorm life is so fun. There are a ton of dining options, the rooms are big enough for you to survive and have your own space, and Housing Services puts on all kinds of events for those living on campus, as well as off. VT: Which majors/programs are best represented and supported?What did you study and why? Did the university do a good job supporting your particular area of study? Bryce:The sciences are very strong at the University of Washington, especially those that stress research (because they are the ones that bring in national and private funding). I studied bioengineering because it was a beautiful mix of medicine and engineering, and it provided me with a fantastic perspective of medicine before I applied to medical school. VT: How easy or difficult was it for you to meet people and make friends as a freshman? Does Greek life play a significant role in the campus social life? Bryce:I played on the ice hockey team, so I immediately had a group of 25 friends. For those not immediately joining a sports team, I would recommend joining a club or at least engaging in all of the social events put on by the dorms. You should definitely live on campus your freshman year; if you like it, you can stay, and if you do not, you can find off-campus housing or join a fraternity or sorority. Greek life is quite prevalent on/near campus, but if you choose not to join (I chose to avoid Greek life), it is pretty easy to avoid, as well. VT: How helpful is the Career Centerand other student support services?Do many reputable companies recruit on campus? Bryce:I did not use the Career Center much, as I was on a straight track to medical school. My friends and colleagues, however, went to several career fairs and got interviews/jobs as a direct result. The University of Washington is one of the most prestigious universities in the northwest, so all major companies (Boeing, Microsoft, Google, Facebook, etc.) recruit from it. VT: How are the various study areas such aslibraries, the student union, and dorm lounges? Are they over-crowded, easily available, spacious? Bryce:The student union was just renovated, and it is absolutely gorgeous. They have a bowling alley, an arcade, ping-pong tables, a ton of dining options, a small bookstore, a bike repair shop, and more. The libraries are great, but the best and most beautiful ones are closed overnight. There is one 24-hour library, and they are currently renovating it, so it should be great when they finish. The best libraries have cubicles and big workspaces, but they do tend to get swamped during midterms and finals. There are a lot of off-campus study options, as well (e.g. coffee shops). VT: Describe the surrounding town. What kinds of outside establishments / things to do are there that make it fun, boring, or somewhere in between?To what extent do students go to the downtown area of the city versus staying near campus? Bryce:Seattle is great. The music scene is fun, and there is always an event going on somewhere in the city. There are generally on-campus events every weekend. I did have some difficulty finding things to do on the weekends before I turned 21, but that can easily be changed by finding like-minded individuals willing to join you in exploring, going to movies, etc. VT: How big or small is the student body? Were you generally pleased or displeased with the typical class sizes? Bryce:The University of Washington has a huge student body the typical entering class is 5,500 students, and there are more than 40,000 students if you count graduate students. Entry-level classes are generally quite large, ranging from 100-770 students. I really did not like my large classes, but thankfully they were few and far between, and the bulk of my work was in classes that were 30-60 students. VT: Describe one memorable experience with a professor and/or class. Perhaps one you loved the most or one youregretthe most. Bryce: Dr. Scott Freeman taught my entry-level biology class. This man could not only captivate a 400-person audience each day, but he truly cared about each of his students. I was working on campus my first two years, and one day he bought coffee from me about two hours before his class. I introduced myself, and he proceeded to say hi to me and call me by name for the next two years. He somehow recalled the name of every student who introduced him or herself to him, and nothing made him happier than learning that one of his old students achieved a goal. When I told him I got into medical school, he smiled as if I were his own son getting admitted. I hope to teach one day, and I will do my best to care about my students as much as Dr. Freeman. Check out these awesome up-and-coming female guitarists in 2015: 1. Molly Rankin Alvvays Pronounced always, Alvvays hails from Toronto. Last year, their self-titled album of jangly, melancholy pop songs earned them rave reviews on Pitchfork and Rolling Stone. If you havent had the chance to see Alvvays yet, theyre planning quite a few American tour dates this year, including stops at SXSW and Forecastle Festival. 2. Angel Olsen Angel Olsens folky guitar style paired with her lovely classic-country vocals made her album Burn Your Fire For No Witness a stand-out release of 2014. Ive seen her take the noisiest venue down to whisper-volume with just her voice and finger-picked acoustic guitar. Youll have plenty of chances to see this indie it-girl this year. Shes got a busy tour calendar, including stops at Coachella, Sasquatch Festival, and Central Park Summerstage. 3. Jessica Clavin Bleached Bleached sound like a 60s girl group reimagined as a classic 77 punk band, with a healthy dose of LA sunshine thrown in for good measure. They released their first album  Ride Your Heart  in 2013, and according to their Facebook page, sisters Jennifer and Jessica Clavin are currently at work on their second full-length release. I dont know about you, but Ive got my fingers crossed well get to hear it in 2015! 4. EMA When it comes to Erika M. Anderson, who releases music under the name EMA, I simply cant fangirl enough! Her guitar, raspy vocals, and electronic instruments can create dark soundscapes and grungy rock songs. Her critically acclaimed 2014 album The Futures Void painted a dark picture of the way technology is changing us and our ability to connect to each other. So far in 2015, she has created and exhibited a musical virtual reality performance art piece at MoMA PS1. EMA stands out to me both as a musician and an artist, and I cant wait to see what she does next. 5. Sadie Dupuis Speedy Ortiz Guitarist and songwriter Sadie Dupuis creates clever and driving grunge rock songs as the frontwoman for Speedy Ortiz. This Massechusetts band will be releasing their highly anticipated sophomore album The Foil Deer in April, and they have American tour dates booked for this summer. Go see Speedy Ortiz for a rock show you wont soon forget. 6. Theresa Wayman Warpaint Warpaints haunting harmonies complement both their quieter, moody tunes, and their more upbeat disco-infused jams. Warpaints music manages to be both atmospheric and funky, although it does occasionally tackle some dark themes. If you get the chance to see these ladies live, dont miss it! They currently have lots of European tour dates booked, but they will be back in the states in time to headline Desert Daze  in May. 7. Katie Crutchfield Waxahatchee Katie Crutchfield wrote and recorded the first Waxahatchee album in a single week at her familys home in Alabama, which actually says a lot about the intimate and lo-fi vibe you can expect from this project. She will be releasing her third album, Ivy Tripp, in 2015, and plans to tour extensively this year. The medical school interview is an essential step toward gaining a medical school acceptance. We wanted to share with you some of the things that make a great medical school interview! A Great Personality Combined with Great Stories You want your personality to shine during the interview. It is best to show off your best traits during your answers by showing enthusiasm, sincerity, and well-thought out answers. When you are describing stories that relate to the questions, you want to show that you really were passionate about those events. Furthermore, you should be able to answer any follow-up questions because you were being sincere about the story to begin with. Lastly, the answers that are well prepared and thought out are often the ones that can demonstrate this style the best. Of course any of your stories will need to have been a personal experience that you could provide all the details for. Furthermore, you want your answer to be directly related to the question and to be a powerful and convincing answer. Again, the interview should be focused on you and why you are a great candidate for their school. A Great Introduction One of the major differences between interviews and the personal statement is how much your first impression will count toward the interview. In this regard, you want to be professional both in dress and demeanor. Furthermore, you want to make sure that you have a firm handshake and to smile when meeting the interviewer. A Great Finale At the end of the interview, you will often get asked Do you have any other questions? This is your chance to have the school sell themselves to you. If you have done your job and sold yourself, it will only be even more convincing for the school to feel like they have to have you select their school over all the others you applied to. Your question should be designed to address a specific aspect about the school that you like and would want more information on. It could range from how students interact together, how small groups function in the setting of learning, what students feel could be improved about the school, etc. You want to show you are well researched in the school and that they need to prove to you that they are the school for you (even if you knew that already). Furthermore, at the end of the interview, you want your interviewer to be an advocate for you. They will be playing an important role in your admission and you want them to have a favorable impression of you. If you feel comfortable, ask for a business card or contact information so you can send a hand-written thank you card. If that is not feasible, an email works also. Do your best to keep in touch with them because they can help notify you of where you may be on the wait list or what you can do to improve your chances of getting in the school.
